The Charity Commission for England and Wales is established by law as the regulator and registrar of charities in England and Wales. Their aim is to provide the best possible regulation of these charities in order to increase charities' efficiency and effectiveness and public confidence and trust in them.
The Charity Finance Directors' Group, (CFDG) is a membership organisation set up in 1987 and specialises in helping charities to manage their accounting, taxation, audit and other finance related functions.
GuideStar UK was set up in 2003 to provide a single, easily accessible source of detailed information about every charity and voluntary organisation in England and Wales. Currently, the site contains details of the 168,000 registered main charities in England and Wales.
The National Council for Voluntary Organisations, (NCVO) is a registered charity which gives voice and support to civil society. NCVO values the independence of the voluntary and community sector and supports organisations to take their own decisions and actions.
The Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations, (SCVO) is the national body representing the voluntary sector. SCVO seeks to advance the values and shared interests of the voluntary sector. There are 45,000 voluntary organisations in Scotland involving up to 130,000 paid staff and over 1.2 million volunteers.
